20 Years of Building Combi Works: Lessons from the Factory Floor to the Boardroom

Share:

I started Combi Works 20 years ago with a laptop, creating a CAD file, and with a clear goal: build real products that solve real problems. No grand vision at the time—just the drive to get something off the ground.

Our first product was a manhole cover, designed in the quiet hours between classes. Production began in Russia because that’s where we had contacts. But from the beginning, the value creation—design, development, and strategy—was firmly rooted in Finland. That’s always been our edge: solid engineering, practical thinking, and a stubborn focus on quality.

We grew fast. My brother and mother started the company with me, turning it into a true family effort. We filled gaps with sweat, made do with what we had, and learned fast. That kind of pressure forces clarity—and resilience.

We didn’t just manufacture. We innovated. Our locking manhole covers were the first in Finland and solved a real customer pain point. We listened, adjusted, and delivered—and the market responded.

Then we expanded into subcontracting. New industries, new materials, new customer needs. Each one came with a steep learning curve—and we climbed every one of them. From castings and forgings to machined parts and assemblies, we kept growing our competence.

We tried consumer products, too. Indoor gardens. Solar lights for the African market. Not every idea stuck, but the experiments taught us a lot. Sometimes what doesn’t scale is just as important as what does.

Eventually, our own growth created chaos. Managing hundreds of projects and factories globally with spreadsheets and emails wasn’t sustainable. So we built a system for ourselves—one that gave us control and visibility. That became AirFaas, a spin-off helping other manufacturers do the same.

Combi Works itself kept evolving. China replaced Russia early on. We expanded to India, Estonia, and across Europe. We opened our own plant and in 2015, rebranded as Combi Works to reflect the breadth of our offering—manufacturing services, products, and technology.

In 2024, we acquired the Alufix guardrail business and expanded our Infra Products segment to four product categories. It’s now one of our key growth engines.

Today, Combi Works stands on two pillars:

  • Infra Products: manhole covers, grates, telescopic assemblies, and guardrails—run by specialists who know these products inside out.
  • Manufacturing Services: a team that supports demanding industrial clients with procurement, product development, and high-precision global manufacturing.

What makes me proud isn’t just what we produce—it’s how we do it. With integrity, focus, and the willingness to build new tools when the old ones no longer work.
